Argyll Estates is a rural based business covering circa 24,000 hectares of mainland Argyll plus the islands of Tiree, Mull and Lismore. The head office is at Inveraray.  The business includes eleven farms, over 250 crofts, forests/native woodland, renewable energy, holiday lets, residential properties, a holiday park, an archive as well as the major visitor attraction of Inveraray Castle. 

The outstanding opportunity has arisen due to a forthcoming retirement and a restructure to reflect the changing requirements of the Estate.  Duties will include assisting the Factor in the day to day running of the overall business of the Estate with wide ranging and varying duties including, but not limited to:

  • General rural and property based professional duties.
  • Agriculture and crofting; including liaising with tenants on reviews, variations, renewals and the like.
  • Forestry; including liaison with the forestry manager and contractors.
  • Holiday lets; including maintaining high standards for visitors, coordinating with letting agents and housekeepers and maintaining a schedule of bookings.
  • Tourism activities; including the Castle and holiday park businesses.
  • Property management including inspections, repairs and rent reviews.
  • Renewables; ranging from supporting business development to submitting quarterly readings.
  • Sporting interests including coordination with stalkers and gamekeepers, coordinating bookings and business development.
  • Involvement in events including festivals, functions, filming and the like.
  • In conjunction with the part-time secretary; general administrative duties including acting as Secretary to the Estate Factor and also to the Duke of Argyll when required.  This includes mail management; dealing with enquiries courteously by phone, e-mail and post; stationary management; general filing and electronic document management in particular.
  • Coordinating with the part-time Secretary and taking over some duties when they are on leave.  (eg. Castle bookings).
  • Assisting with Estate staff matters and working will all staff and the section managers in particular to assist where necessary to make the business work.
  • Taking appropriate responsibility for additional matters when the Factor is on leave (eg financial matters, insurance, purchases/sales, legal queries etc)
  • Assistance in recruitment and advertising; including seasonal recruitment.
  • Managing the employees’ holiday schedule.
  • Mapping.
  • Liaison with other professionals to prepare legal documents and an ability to understand and use legal deeds and the like.
  • Other duties as required to assist the Factor in the management of the Estate.

The successful applicant will primarily work under the direction of the Factor and will be expected to have a high degree of self-motivation and be able to work without supervision.

Experience, Qualifications and Key Skills

  • Ideally a member of the RICS and with, or working to, a qualification.
  • Relevant previous experience.
  • Fully computer literate.
  • Full driving license.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills at all levels.
  • Adaptable to change with a desire to solve problems.
  • Ability to travel and a requirement to work away from the main office and out of hours at times is essential.

Although an indicative salary is mentioned above, the final package will be negotiable and may include other significant benefits.
